"A Rose With A Thorn"

In honor of the Eighth month, here is my final tribute to the beautiful Eighth Doctor–whom I love so very, very much. Despite the traumatic circumstances of his regeneration (he woke up freezing in a morgue, for goodness’ sake!), he is bright, enthusiastic, honest, and one of the sweetest and most passionate Doctors ever. Though, at times, the pendulum too easily swings to a darker, colder nature full of snark and weary of battle. Over time he is broken by pain and loss, driven to the edge of insanity and heartbreak, until at last the Time War destroys him. Every Doctor since has had to cope with the memory of what Eight endured…and usually ends up following a similar pattern.

I’ve tried to capture that transition, from his beautiful, golden beginning, to his broken, hardened, world-weary (and much disputed) end. I didn’t have time to polish this up to the extent I was hoping for, but I’m pleased with the result, despite LCD monitors sucking out all the colors. Paul Mcgann is extremely difficult to paint, but that doesn’t stop me from loving him beyond words!

Lots of symbolism in this one! The butterflies because he has an actual butterfly room in his TARDIS! *___* And the silhouettes in the middle are my failed attempt at portraying the Doctor and Morbius’ fall in the Big Finish audio drama “The Vengeance of Morbius”. And Gallifrey and blood because…yeah.

Many massive thanks to Sara, Dorothy and Ashleigh for generously contributing to the Fanart Fund and giving me the opportunity to finish this!
